Top Tips for a Great Wedding ....

Top Tips For a Great Wedding :

It's so easy, when you've just got engaged, to get caught up in the whirl-wind of wedding fayres & looking at venues & suppliers, without ever really coming to any decisions... There's so much choice & the prices can vary massively, so to begin with, you need to ask yourselves the following questions .....

  • What you really like about weddings ?.
  • What you really dislike about weddings?.

  • What is the total amount of money that you want to spend on your wedding?.

  • What do you want people to say about your wedding?

By answering the questions above, you can narrow down the options & start making some decisions. To do this, you would normally start by breaking down your budget & deciding exactly what you intend to have on your wedding day. So, for example, if the average spend on a reception is around 40% of your budget, ask yourself if that will be enough to ensure you have all the things that you want .... If the most important thing is that you want the full works in terms of canapés, a sit-down wedding breakfast, with wines, champagne toast etc.. you might have to forfeit something else, that is less important to you both.

Once you have decided exactly what money you have to spend on each of the elements that you require, you need to decide on a theme for your wedding. By this, I don't mean fancy dress ... it's more about what colour schemes do you both like & in terms of a venue, do you like old buildings or do you prefer the more contemporary style?

Once you have a theme in mind, stick to it & ensure that everything mirrors it, from the invitations, through to the favours & everywhere in-between.

Here's what to do next:

  • Find a venue that can accommodate your needs. This may either be for a packaged wedding or a venue that offers more flexibility.

  • Ensure the venue matches both your style & budget.

  • Book early to secure any special deals they might be offering.

  • To get maximum value for your money, book a mid-week day or a Friday.

  • Engage suppliers that are flexible & can deliver to the style & price you require.

  • Stick to your original plan .. don't get pressured in to doing things that don't suit you .. you'll regret it on the day.

Consider hiring a planner. The misconception is that this is a massive additional expense to your budget .. However, if you find a good planner, this shouldn't be the case. Most planners start with a free consultation, where you can get to know each other & they should listen to everything that you wish to have for your wedding. From that, they should produce a proposal for you that documents everything that they will do for you & the associated fees that they will charge. A planner will be used to working with suppliers & will generally be able to negotiate discounts on your behalf. You'll also have the added advantage of an expert being on-hand, from the moment you hire them, normally to the time you have your first dance.

The Wedding Planning College

WHY SET-UP THE WEDDING PLANNING COLLEGE?

After being inundated with requests for instant advice & practical training, Lisa Hilliard (from Lisa Hilliard Wedding Planning) & myself, have joined forces to launch The Wedding Planning College
There will be few weddings as prestigious as Prince William & Kate Middleton, but with the number of weddings expected to increase, it won’t only be the rich & famous that will look to hire the services of a wedding planner. However, wedding planning is unregulated & there are no mandatory qualifications required to set-up a wedding planning business.

The Wedding Planning College offers Training Events, Mentoring & On-going business support

WHAT DOES THE WEDDING PLANNING COLLEGE OFFER?

The Wedding Planning College prides itself on offering real, honest & professional advice through training events, personal mentoring & long term business support. The graduates from the college will be encouraged to become part of an on-going network that aims to bring best practice to their businesses.

Watching films such as The Wedding Planner can sometimes paint an inaccurate picture of what’s really involved in planning the most important day in someone’s life. This kind of romantic media results in many people aspiring to wedding planning as their dream job.... which it can be ... but it’s also a lot of hard work, both emotionally & physically!

Lisa & I will personally mentor people to achieve their dream but our support will be based on practical learning & experience. We believe that as established and trading wedding planners we can offer real training & advice to enable people to become successful planners.

103
The Courses have been designed by REAL Wedding Planners

WHERE & WHEN WILL THE TRAINING TAKE PLACE?

Using the fabulous training facilities, on the 6th Floor of the new CASA Hotel, in Chesterfield, we aim to attract people from the Midlands & Yorkshire to our “Train to Plan” two day training events. Each event will take place over a weekend and includes a mixture of factual based learning, individual exercises, group activities & guest speakers, from the industry. Lisa & I will guide & mentor delegates through each session, offering honest advice, sharing real examples and working with individuals to inspire their own wedding planning business development.

WHAT TRAINING & BUSINESS SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE?

Training sessions will include “Setting up a wedding planning business” & “How to plan & coordinate a Wedding”. The first ones are due to be held on the 1st/2nd October & the 5th/ 6th November.

There are opening offers for the first 16 delegates. Please check the website for details:

Lisa said “There were no specific practical wedding planning courses when I started my business & I went in to it somewhat blind. General courses helped with the business side of things & an on-line course taught me an overview of the wedding planning industry, but no-one actually told me what I really needed to know”

All Train to Plan events offer REAL honest advice, guidance & support

How to have a Unique Wedding

How to have a Unique Wedding
I've said it before ... I believe that no two weddings should be the same... your wedding should be bespoke to you ... not a replica of someone else's.
At Unique, I specialise in the use of Unique venues & the creation of bespoke weddings & services. I don't believe that it matters what your budget is ...  it's about the way you choose to spend the money & ensuring that your day reflects your personality & the day you want to have.
So what are my top tips for planning a Unique Wedding Day ?For the process to begin, I think you both need to answer four key questions :
  1. What do you like about weddings?
  2. What do you really dislike about weddings?
  3. What do you want people to say about your Wedding?
  4. What is the total amount that you want to spend on your wedding?

couple-talking
Start with a plan that you both agree on !

Wedding budget breakdown advice:This will vary slightly from book to book & between planners, but the below is a good indication (as supplied by the BBC web-site).
  • 45% on the wedding reception - venue, food, drink and cake
  •   5%  on ceremony - venue fees, wedding rings & choir
  •   8%  on all flowers
  •   5%  on transport - bridal cars and additional cars
  • 10% on photography and videography
  • 12% on wedding attire including dress
  • 15% on everything else - stationery, gifts for bridal party, wedding insurance, wedding night accommodation and honeymoon

Decide if these percentages are really the way that you want to spend your money. For example, having a great band may be more important to you than whether you have a selection of five canapes. You may choose to get married at a venue where you don't need transport etc.
Using all your ideas, re-do your budget to show exactly what you want to spend your money on.

Venue & supplier search advice:Once you have a really good idea of what you both want from your day & know exactly what you want to spend on it then you are ready to find a venue & suppliers to match your theme & budget. Here are some of the things that I would look at:
  • How flexible is your wedding venue & are they interested in your ideas?
  • Are you tied to set package for food & drink?
  • Have you got exclusive use of the venue?
  • Can you taste the food before your wedding day?
  • Can you use the suppliers you want to at your chosen venue?
  • Are there any restrictions on times for either the ceremony or closing time?
  • Are there minimum / maximum numbers of guests that you have to have?
  • Do you have to purchase rooms at the venue?
  • Is the venue happy to work with a wedding planner, should you chose to have one?
  • How flexible are suppliers on the options that they are offering?
  • Will they adapt to suit something that you particularly want?
  • What are their prices compared to the competition & if they are more / less expensive, what makes that difference?
  • Do they have testimonials & images of previous work, so you can ensure that they match your theme?
I hope you find this useful .... I do think that finding the just the right venue & theme will give you a Unique Day & one that you will remember forever .. for all the right reasons!
Finally... hiring a good Wedding Planner will guarantee that you find the venue & suppliers to match both your style & budget ... I always start with a free consultation that covers all the above .. what have you got to loose??

Purple theme

Purple Styling Inspiration
I know I put a blog together recently indicating that Peach is on trend as the colour to have for the new season... well..that might be happening on the High Street & in magazines, but it doesn't seem to be the case in reality......
I've met over 50 new couples over the last few weeks & many of them seem to be just loving dark purple... I can see why.. It's so versatile & transfers easily from a chic summer look in to dramatic evening styling..great with tea lights, candles & a crisp white background...

As you can see....it's just fantastically versatile.  Lot's of brides described it as "Cadburys" purple..(now I'm not sure I'm supposed to say that..but that's exactly what it is!!).
When I take one of the signature Calla-Lilly bouquets from Katie Peckett to a Wedding Fayre, they're a real show stopper.  Come along to Wentworth Castle Wedding Fayre on Sunday 13th March & you'll see why..

Capesthorne Hall

So why did I choose Capesthorne Hall to exhibit at this weekend?
Well, it fits the Unique brand perfectly.  It is both stylish & sophisticated & has the most amazing potential in which to create your Unique Day. There are so many options to choose from, including exclusive use of the Hall, a Pavillion that holds up to 450 guests & the fantastic, new, Lakeside venue. All options give full access to the fabulous lakes & gardens.
The distinctive Jacobean style house with its Georgian Chapel and delightful gardens and lakes is set in over 100 acres of parkland. The fresh and vibrant interior contains an unusual collection of historic paintings; marbles; sculptures; porcelains; English; European; Far Eastern and American antique furniture collected by family members.
The staff at Capesthorne pride themselves on being able to provide a venue with individuality & the elegant interior and landscape will make Capesthorne an ideal venue for anyone considering hosting their wedding reception or civil partnership in Cheshire.

Wentworth Castle

There are lots of reasons to have your wedding at the superb venue, Wentworth Castle, not least of all because of the history that lays behind it, that makes it one of the most fascinating buildings for miles.
The bitter family feud between Thomas Wentworth & his cousin over inheritance, resulted in the building of a vast estate & gardens, with Thomas determined to show his wealth. In 1727 Thomas even began to build the mock castle on the highest point of the estate that could be viewed by his cousin some 7 miles away. In 1731, when the building was complete, he renamed the house and estate as Wentworth Castle.
Whatever the reasons, what remains today is a superb venue, steeped in history, with many opportunities to have the wedding & photographs of your dreams.  It is a favoured venue of some of the top photographers in our region & the images below are courtesy of one of my favourites, Tierney Photography.

Selecting a wedding Planner

How to select your Wedding Planner.

So you've decided that you would like some help with the planning of your wedding, whether it be starting with the whole design or just co-ordination of the day.. so what are the things that you will need to consider ?
The below article is impartial advice from the UK Alliance of Wedding Planners, to which I am a member.
Ukawp_Logo
One of the main reasons for the existence of the UKAWP is to act as a reliable reference point for you, the bride. If you are looking for a professional wedding planner, this is the place for you. All of our members have been vetted for their honesty, professionalism and experience. They all offer a consultation where you can discuss your wedding in more detail and how they may be able to help you. Please view our code of ethics and entry requirements to understand how serious we are about the industry and the planners we promote. To further assist you we have devised some guidelines below.
RESEARCH
• Look through wedding magazines or search engines to see which planners are listed for your area. Start by reading their websites thoroughly to understand how they operate.
• Read the websites carefully for typos and bad grammar. If they cannot proof read their own work, then can you trust them with your stationery?
• Contact them for more information. Do they respond within an acceptable timeframe with clear and concise details?
• Arrange a consultation with at least two that meet your requirements. This should be arranged at a time and place convenient for you.
CONSULTATION
• During the consultation, does the planner ask lots of questions regarding your personality and any initial plans?
• Do they understand your wedding vision? They should be enthusiastic and build on your ideas.
• Do you have a rapport and feel at ease with them? Remember you will be in close contact during the planning so you must actually like them as a person!
• What special touches can they recommend for your wedding?
• How long they have been in business and how many weddings have they organised? Can they provide references?
• Ask how they charge, for example do they charge a fixed fee or a percentage of the budget?
• Ask if they accept commission from suppliers and are discounts passed onto you?
• Ask to see proof of public liability insurance.
• Do they have a portfolio for you to look at from past weddings?
THE PROPOSAL
• When this arrives, does it match your recent discussion?
• If the quote is not acceptable, then contact the planner to discuss. Could there be any items that could be removed?
• Check  whether there are any extra charges, i.e. travel, accommodation, administrative work.
• Once you book a planner, make sure you sign a contract. Read it carefully.
• Don’t forget to use your planner as an information source; they may be able to advise you on any issues of concern.
• Keep in regular contact with your planner and update them of any changes.
For more information regarding wedding planners, please email info@ukawp.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  or call 01483 282858, 01376 561 544 or 01442 828061
My personal advice would be to look for someone who you feel can give your Wedding their full attention.  I also think it's useful to go with someone who has the experience of planning their own wedding & then they better understand the emotional side of the planning process & can help you through times of stress.
Well, I've been married twice & have organised both a very traditional Wedding & also a Wedding away from home, followed by a huge party, complete with a 3 tier chocolate cake, live band & bridesmaids.. Whatever your needs, I feel confident that I will have the experience to deal with them.

Gold theme

Gold Wedding Inspiration.
I was recently asked by a bride to be for help with room decoration ideas to compliment her Gold themed wedding this Spring.  The brief was that there are to be no floral arrangements for table centre-pieces & that balloons need to be incorporated.
As part of the feedback to a request for inspiration, I would always make suggestions that cover all the aspects of the wedding, from flowers, to cakes to favours to ensure that any theme flows through the whole day.
For this particular wedding, I have also suggested subtle use of gold through table runners, chair sashes & a tasteful organza bow on the wedding table. Candelabras will be in place as table centre-pieces & to compliment the elegant feel I have suggested the use of gold crystals to scatter across the tables as they will break up the flat look to plain linen.

Gold Themed Wedding Room Decorations

As part of the feedback, I would always recommend a couple of suppliers for each of the ideas that I am suggesting.  This way you'll have alternatives to suit both your style & budget.
I guarantee that I can provide innovative solutions for absolutely everything that you will need for your Unique day & as your first consultation is free, what are you waiting for ! !

Wedding Trends 2011

Something New for 2011
With the temperature finally lifting to something without a minus in it.. what better time to begin thinking about Spring & the start of the Wedding Season.
A touch of peach is bang on trend for weddings in 2011 & there are so many ways that you can incorporate this great colour in to your styling of your wedding.
There are some wonderful flowers to go with your peach theme, whether in your bouquet or table centre decorations....cakes & overall venue styling can be teamed up with browns or even gun-metal grey to create the look, which again these colours are an emerging high street trend..
I can't think of a better way to kick off your peach themed reception than with with bellinis ... not only do they look impressive.. they taste good too !

Reasons for a December wedding

With only a week to go to Christmas, I thought I would share this mood board that I think captures the whole spirit of a fabulous, festive wedding.
Apart from the totally Unique atmosphere that is created at this time of year with the general excitement in the run up to the holiday season, there are some great advantages to having a December Wedding.
  • Apart from the key dates in December, most Unique venues would consider this an off-peak month & you should be able to negotiate a discount.
  • Venues will be decorated for Christmas & you will pick up the benefit of this at no extra cost (Always check the colour scheme fits with yours though ! ).
  • You can have a Unique look with a strong colour theme & accessorise it with plenty of sparkle & glamour.
  • You avoid the peak holiday season & will find most of the people you want to be at your special day can actually make it, including the suppliers !
  • It's a more Unique time of year & the chances are it won't be what your friends & family have already done.
  • There is just something magical about a Castle with a roaring fire...think mulled wine...mince pies.....perfect..

Why have a Wedding Planner?

It's a question that many couples ponder over with the perception that hiring a planner will increase their costs, whilst not being sure of the benefits. Well..first of all, a good planner should have strong, established relationships with key suppliers.  Most of the suppliers will offer discounts to the planner as they are bringing business to them & these should be passed directly to the couple as a saving...this will then cover a portion or sometimes all the cost for the planning service, depending on what your needs are. In addition, the planner will do all the leg-work involved, with over 200+ hours of organisation that a full wedding plan demands. Not to mention constant emails, calls & dealing with the the emotional & stressful issues that planning the most important day of your life creates !

Utilising their tried & trusted supplier base, known for both quality & service, it will be yours to create your own theme including colour scheming, dining & entertainment.

Unique Weddings

After months of planning, Cat & Graham had the most perfect day on Saturday. With the sun streaming through the windows, the Millennium Gallery is a truly stunning venue:

The guests took full advantage of the weather & enjoyed their canapes on the balcony, whilst the Kendal String Quartet provided the background entertainment:

Cat & Graham gave the guests an hours chill out time, whilst they had the most stunning photographs taken on their champagne trip in the VIP box on the Sheffield Eye...I can't wait to post the official images in the Unique Gallery in a couple of weeks time!
The Wedding Breakfast was held at the St.Paul's Hotel & had a strong Black/White & Diamante theme. Here's an image I took during the Venue set-up.

With Cat's dislike of fruitcake & Graham's aversion to chocolate, a cheese tower, from the Cheese-Factor in Chesterfield, provided a fantastic alternative & was a great addition to the Evening Buffet!

Cat & Graham have just completed a huge building project transforming a 1930's property in to their stunning new home. Along with their Wedding, the house has been such a major part of their lives over the last 18 months, they wanted everyone to have a piece of it to keep....the idea was born to use the roof slates as place settings...not only a Unique touch..they looked amazing!
